Visual Communication

The development of fundamental communication skills is complex and it takes time. During this time the child still has no effective means of communication. Therefore the majority of our pupils are taught to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).PECSquickly gives our children an effective means of communication and as a consequence avoids many of the behaviour problems associated with the frustration of not being able to communicate.

Children with Autism have particular problems processing auditory information. However they process visual information very quickly; they are visual thinkers. Both of these factors have implications for the way in which we teach :

  •  We use minimal speech.
  • We  give our pupils time to process information
  • We use visual support in all lesson
