Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) is a vibrant, inclusive and engaging part of the curriculum.
Our MFL curriculum is carefully adapted to meet the diverse needs of our learners and is therefore taught holistically rather than discretely. We focus on developing cultural awareness, communication and enjoyment of MFL exposure through meaningful, accessible and multisensory experiences.
Sessions are practical, interactive and rooted in real-life contexts, enabling pupils to make connections between language, culture and the world around them.
MFL is woven throughout the wider curriculum to create meaningful and memorable learning experiences. Pupils may explore:
- Geography through learning about countries where different languages are spoken
- Art and Design through studying artists and creating culturally inspired artwork
- Music through traditional songs and instruments
- Food Technology through tasting and preparing simple dishes from other cultures
- PSHCE through exploring diversity, identity and global communities
- Literacy and Communication through storytelling, drama and shared texts
We celebrate languages and cultures throughout the year. This includes through TLG specific topics, MFL focussed days and/or weeks, cultural celebration days, and other events that immerse pupils in the sights, sounds and tastes of different countries. Activities may include:
- Cultural workshops and performances
- International food tasting
- Art and craft projects
These events promote curiosity, respect and appreciation for diversity, while creating a sense of excitement and shared learning across the school community.
Through MFL, we aim to:
- Foster curiosity about the wider world
- Promote respect and understanding of different cultures
- Support speech, language and communication development
- Provide inclusive opportunities for success
We are proud to offer an MFL curriculum that is engaging, accessible and enriching for every learner, helping them to become confident communicators and active global citizens.
