Geography - Why do we teach it?
At Broomfield, Geography helps pupils develop a sense of their place in the world and understand how people, environments and cultures are connected.
Through meaningful, accessible and engaging experiences, pupils learn about their local community and the wider world while developing empathy, curiosity and an understanding of the impact humans have on the environment.
Our curriculum is ambitious and inclusive across all TLGs, supporting preparation for life through the development of independence, communication, community awareness and real-life skills.
For Formal and Semi-Formal Challenge learners, Geography is taught as a discrete subject; developing knowledge and skills such as map work, human and physical geography, environmental awareness and understanding different countries and cultures.
For Semi-Formal Connect and Informal learners, geographical learning is delivered through the “My World” strand, where pupils explore familiar environments, weather, seasons, community spaces and sensory experiences through practical and topic-based learning.
Learning is enriched through multisensory and experiential opportunities including outdoor learning, educational visits, visitors, artefacts and whole-school cultural theme days.
A Total Communication approach ensures all pupils can access and engage with learning.
Through Geography, pupils develop confidence, independence and greater awareness of the world around them. They build important preparation for life skills including community awareness, travel confidence, environmental responsibility and cultural understanding, enabling them to participate in their communities with increasing confidence, empathy and understanding.
