Design & Technology - Why do we teach it?

At Broomfield, we teach Design and Technology to develop learners’ creativity, independence, problem-solving and practical life skills through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

DT provides opportunities for all pupils to explore, design, make and evaluate products across a range of contexts, enabling them to understand how things work and how they can shape the world around them.

Through the four strands of Structures, Mechanisms, Textiles and Food Technology, learners develop functional skills, resilience and confidence while applying their learning in real-life situations.

Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive, sensory and highly practical, supporting learners from early exploratory experiences through to increasingly independent and purposeful making.

Product Design is interwoven throughout the curriculum, encouraging pupils to make choices, solve problems, refine ideas and create products for themselves and others.

Design and Technology at Broomfield plays a vital role in Preparation for Adulthood by developing communication, organisation, safety awareness and independence, equipping learners with the skills they need for life beyond school.
