Broomfield SILC

Summer Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer,

A few bits of news for you.  We are planning a whole SILC trip out to Bridlington on Thursday 20th July. Escorts and drivers have agreed to come with us this time so we will be looking where possible to take pupils to the coast and back home on their regular transport.  Any medical issues will be dealt with in advance – our nursing team will be accompanying us and if you have any prior concerns they are willing to discuss this with you individually to deal with any foreseeable problems. We will also run our own coach and minibuses where necessary to cater for any pupils that need other arrangements.  Our staffing ratio will be greatly boosted by drivers and escorts joining us and we will have more flexibility in whereabouts we park, facilities etc.  We are hiring a number of chalets and have negotiated free or reduced rates on various amenities – so it should be a brilliant day out to finish off another year!  We will send a slip out in the next few days for you to sign and give your permission or raise any concerns you may have.

We are also looking to the future of the school and are presently in very early discussions with Cockburn over joining them and other local schools in a South Leeds community Multi Academy Trust (MAT).  If after initial talks the Governors feel this is the way to go for the school we will offer an open evening/afternoon for parents to come along and find out more about what this will offer the school.  We will only consider formerly joining the MAT if we believe it as a long term benefit to our school – and if it does go ahead you will probably not see many differences at ground root level in the functioning of the school – it will be more noticeable at a strategic level.

School closes for our main-site and Windmill this Friday for half term.  Our Rodillian site pupils are following the Rodillian Academy schedule and will therefore be in school next week (Tues-Fri) and have their break in mid-June.

We have relaunched our web-site – I am sure you will like it’s new format – but we are still in the process of updating a number of pages so please be patient with us.  If you have any ideas to improve the site please contact the school and let us know.

We have a number of Residentials taking place at the moment.  I visited a group at How Steam Gorge last week and at Lineham Farm this week and the young people were having a fantastic time.  It is brilliant that so many of our staff are willing to give up their personal time to facilitate these residential experiences and that we are managing to provide this type of experience for the vast majority of our pupils.

Take care

John Fryer
